Did you know that there are many factors to consider in getting good sleep? Not a lot of people realize that sleeping well can be as complicated as doing our other waking activities. This is because the quality of your sleep can easily be affected by the slightest things—from the temperature of your room to your activity prior to hitting the sack. In fact, the Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine cites that finding a comfortable temperature for your room and skipping intake of caffeine and chocolate hours before bedtime can help promote better shut-eye. However, the biggest factor that affects one’s sleep rhythm is something you may not even consider at all: your mattress.

Many are under the impression that any mattress will do for their bedroom. If you really want some quality shut-eye, however, you need to find the right sleeping partner for yourself. In particular, it is recommended that you re-assess if your mattress is still giving you the support you need after years of using it.

Thankfully, there are now mattress providers that focus on providing products backed by research and rigorous testing to provide good sleep. The most prominent in the Philippines is Uratex with its collection of Sleep Specialist products. The local brand, which has gained household status for being in the industry for five decades, has consistently delivered in providing quality yet affordable collections.

Among these is the Uratex Thin Cotton product which is the brand’s most affordable, quality mattress. Developed using Uratex’s world-class technology, the two-inch thick foam promises to deliver comfort to its users. The product is designed to have medium firmness with open cell technology that not only provides the body with good support but also a more refreshing sleeping experience compared to other mattresses. The unit, which retails at a very affordable price of 1,499.75 PHP, comes with a pongee washable zippered fabric.

In addition to being a high-quality product, the Thin Cotton mattress also comes with a 5-year warranty like other Uratex units. Considering the product’s price tag, a consumer only pays less than a peso (0.82) a day if they get to use it for five years. On top of its products’ affordability and world-class quality, Uratex is also well-known for providing a good after-sales service that makes every purchase worthwhile.

To make sure that it only delivers the best to its consumers, Uratex uses the Quali-5 Cellular Technology which is a set of standards that ensures the quality of its products. Each Uratex product is made using the best raw materials and advanced equipment that uses world-class technology. Uratex also has an ISO 9001 accreditation to help guide its management processes and quality management system.

The Thin Cotton mattress is just one among the many Uratex products that will now be widely available in the VisMin region. As part of its 50th celebration of being in the industry, the company is now moving to expand its operations beyond Luzon with a mission to bring quality mattresses for every Filipino to lie on.

Currently, Uratex has over 500 retailers in Visayas and Mindanao, with a plan to open up more stores through various retailers in the coming months.

Eucalyptus and menthol essences, which are extracted from the eucalyptus plant, are very popular for their variety of uses. From providing quick relief to a variety of health concerns to being popular cosmetic ingredients, these two compounds have proven their effectiveness ever since they were first utilized during the ancient times. The popularity of these two compounds remains strong nowadays, with their application used in aromatherapy, beauty products, and other usages where it requires instant relief.

There are over 400 different species of eucalyptus in the world. Also called the blue gum, the leaves of its plant are known to be rich in antioxidants called flavonoids and tannins which help reduce inflammation.
Menthol, on the other hand, is a minty, organic substance that can be derived from a variety of sources like peppermint, eucalyptus, and pennyroyal. The compound is well-known for its health benefits when taken orally or topically.

Both menthol and eucalyptus are very effective in providing instant relief. In particular, the two are very popular for their usage in relieving throat problems. Menthol, in particular, is commonly used on cough medicines and drops to provide relief on throat irritations, coughs, and other mouth problems. Eucalyptus, on the other hand, has been used for centuries to cure sore throat due to its menthol scent and flavor.

For instant throat relief, one very effective solution is to take lozenges infused with the said compounds. One brand which has mastered its menthol lozenges is Fishermans Friend. First developed by pharmacist James Lofthouse as a solution that can provide instant relief for fishermen, the brand has continuously innovated itself by producing new flavors that fit the changing tastes of its consumers. Still, Fishermans Friend has kept its quality formulation which includes menthol and eucalyptus as its original ingredients.
But it is not only during throat emergencies that lozenges are helpful. They can be taken every day, and Fishermans Friend made sure that they can be enjoyed with the variety of flavors they are offering. The brand comes in varieties like Sugar Free Spearmint, Sugar Free Lemon, Sugar Free Mint, Sugar Free Mandarin, Sugar Free Cherry and Mint. All the fun flavored varieties include menthol, while the Original flavour both includes menthol and eucalyptus.
Lozenges can be a regular part of your everyday routine. Had a long presentation at work? Calm your throat by popping a lozenge. Is it too cold in the classroom and youre feeling the chill at the back of your throat? Choose your favourite Fishermans Friend flavor and enjoy it to calm the discomfort. You can even just take it like a regular sweet because of how enjoyable the brands flavours are!
Drop by any Drugstore, Convenience Store or Supermarket and grab a packet (or two!) of Fishermans Friend. Each pack retails for Php44.75. For more information about the brand, head to their website at https://www.fishermansfriend.com/ or follow their Facebook page at  www.facebook.com/FishermansFriendPH.

Everyone deserves a love story, but let’s face it: dating within the LGBTQ community isn’t cakewalk. This is especially true for those just coming to terms with their sexuality and are unsure where to start. There are a few options to kick off the quest for love, from LGBTQ-friendly bars to online forums and dating apps. Still, the experience can be quite nerve-wracking without some kind of guide. In the spirit of Pride Month this June, here are five practical tips from people’s experiences to help kindle the chance for romance:

Know Your Comfort Level

The LGBTQ community is vast with many levels of coming out. Simple gestures such as holding hands or hugging in public may already be an issue for some, while others may avoid dating in certain places for fear of being seen by family or friends. If you are similarly on the shy side, you may feel more comfortable dating someone equally reserved. It’s understandable that courage can take time, and there’s no shame coming out step by step.

Consider Safe Spaces

The typical coffee shop or restaurant isn’t bad for a meet-up, but if you want a sure-fire, LGBTQ-friendly place in Metro Manila, here’s a few you can consider. Fred’s Revolucion is one among other establishments in Cubao Expo, Quezon City, that signed up for the Safe Space Campaign in 2013 to show commitment in the fight against homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia. Another is Uno Morato, a cultural hub, coffee shop, and bar along Maginhawa Street, Quezon City, where LGBTQ dates would not feel out of place. In Poblacion, Makati, Commune offers great Philippine coffee and conversation for any and all visitors. There’s plenty more places like these where you and your date can feel more secure opening up, so be sure to look up LGBTQ-friendly spaces online when planning a casual meet-up.

Build Rapport

Chances are your date is just as anxious, more so if you two are newly out and new to the dating scene. In that case, it’s ok to tell your date that you’re nervous to help lighten the mood. Break the ice further by asking basic questions about work, school, hobbies, or future plans, and don’t be afraid to talk about yourself. Being too cautious would only make you look boring, disinterested, or untrustworthy. Should you talk about politics and religion? Some advise against it, but if you’re serious about finding a long-term partner, you would want to know whether your values and principles match. Just keep an open mind and stay cool even if the other one takes a stance opposite yours. Do watch out about getting too personal once the ball starts rolling, like suddenly talking about bedroom fantasies or exes if there are any. You want your date to feel safe, not pressured, objectified, or plainly creeped out.

Set Realistic Expectations

It’s not wrong to have standards when dating, but remember that no one is perfect. Don’t let a stringent checklist or ideal preference stop you from enjoying the company of new people. It’s also important not to be too self-conscious, so be yourself and laugh a little. Who knows, your date might just find you attractive and you click from the get go. There are a few red flags, of course, like if your date is rude to the wait staff or has terrible hygiene. Otherwise, be confident and have fun.

Drop a Message

Even if a first date isn’t successful, it’s polite to say something after. Most people today, including members of the LGBTQ community, resort to ghosting—suddenly disappearing from contact without explanation—hoping to get their message across, but imagine being in that other person’s shoes. Rejection is tough, and it gets tougher if you don’t know why. Always follow the golden rule. Send the other person a message saying thanks for hanging out with you, and that you think you don’t match or didn’t feel a romantic connection. On the other hand, if you liked your date, be sure to say that you enjoyed the evening and are interested in seeing him or her again. Don’t sound too pushy, though. Your date is also evaluating you, so give the other person a chance to accept or deny the offer of a second meeting.

LGBTQ dating in the real world isn’t something openly televised or given exposure on media. Fortunately, some shows like First Dates feature everyday people, men and women across the rainbow spectrum, going on blind dates—real-life scenarios perfect for a few lessons on dating.
